Does Google care about SEO contests and seocontest2008?

While the Seocontest2008 SERP are floating (we see us #2 instead of #1 from time to time), we are wondering : is Google (or the other search engines by the way) giving a special attention to seocontests, and especially to this seocontest, seocontest2008 ?

In fact, seocontesting and the various international seo contests in the past (recently V7ndotcom Elursrebmem, Globalwarming Awareness2007, and now seocontest2008) are famous in the seo-microcosm, and each contest adds a serious number of results in the Google index. At the moment, a search for the term “seocontest2008” on Google returns 613,000 results, which is pretty huge.

So, why Google may care about seocontest2008 ?

  • because he is supposed to be the referee πŸ˜€
  • because it’s all about challenging Google main service : web search (and its relevance)
  • to see how the engine react in this special case, if the first results looks good despite the lack of context, the strengths and weaknesses of the algorithm, and so on
  • to see how SEOers try to rank (their methods and tips)

A seocontest is usefull for seo consultants, in order to better understand how Google works, but it can also highlight the vulnerability of search engines. That’s why Google engineers are probably reading us in order to tweak the beast (hi, we can assure you that we are the best ressource avalaible on the seocontest2008, and thus that we should be ranked first ;p).

Search engines are reacting differently on this contest, and Google is doing well. In fact, since seocontest2008 is a totally new word, it’s hard to determine what websites to show to the user, and you can try to fool SE by writing random content with “seocontest2008” in it, or gaining links from strong websites whatever their topic.

Look at the results on Yahoo! or Live : not really good isn’it ? Yahoo! results are very strange, and nor our main competitors nor our seocontest2008 is on the first page. Well, we don’t mind since this time it’s Google-only, but it’s interesting to see the differences, and to notice that Google results seems far better.

Objectively, do you find the Google results “relevant” ? Do you think Google guys are reading us ? Do you think we will win, and that we deserve it ? Do you like rabbits ?

Finally, I should have played with you guys. It looks like this SEO competition was fun !
However, I have to admit that I’m a little burn out from these kind of contests.
Good luck for the final rush.

During the “Sorcier Glouton” contest, which was contested on the MSN/Live search engine, on march 2005, Microsoft France sent some of its team to meet us, trying to understand better our technics, our tips and cheats. What went out from those discussions and meeting, was not very appreciable for us, anyway, we appreciated this intention.
What Microsoft did on 2005, I think Google could have done on 2008. Anyway, even if they didn’t met the contestant, as Microsoft teammates (which were very nice, cool and open-minded, yet good looking to for the girl ;)), they may have eared of this Seocontest2008 international contest and may look to it with attention…

In case they do, I hope they enjoy all this.
Soon, we’ll organize a post-seocontest2008 dinner in France… If Matt Cutts (or anybody from Google) wants to come, he’ll be welcome (but, he brings his girlfriend and a good bottle of wine :D).
PS: Besides, if some other contestant (even from San Diego ;)) want to join us at such a dinner, just tell us, we’ll organize the meet…

The results were not only 600k+, it already reached 800k+ but Google does some sort of recount once in a while. I don’t know why but I have seen this many times in previous SEO contest.

On comparing G, Y and M. I must say in the previous SEO contest GlobalWarming Awareness2007, my strategy there was so different since you needed to rank high in all 3 search engines and there was this kind of commulative score.

@Eclipsis: Nice I wish I could visit one day there, wherever you guys are and just do some knowledge sharing.

Last October 2007, I went back to the Philippines as a speaker at the SEMCon 07. Yahoo and Google Asia representatives were there. As well as several SEO personalities like Aaron Wall and Todd Malicoat. One thing I can say is Google Philippines and the rest of the Google Asia team are cool. They talked to us and shared a of info.

Just noticed something that the geographic location (gl) changes the results of Google. See the two links

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&gl=fr&q=Seocontest2008
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&gl=us&q=Seocontest2008

No changes in top two places but 3 and 4 are different (or were when I looked)

Is it because different servers are interrogated or is there something else that changes with the gl variable ? Which geographic location is used to determine the winner on April 1st ?
